Why Pono?

In Hawaiian, the word Pono has many meanings, but the most basic one is “Righteousness/goodness” or balance.

When people meet my dog, they always asked how did a come out with the name Pono for her even though I’m not Hawaiian. Well, it started out as an inside joke between my sister and cousin and then transformed to the name of our rescue pup.

I grew up in the age of good Disney Channel movies. One of the ones we watched as a. kid was Johny Tsunami. For those of you that never watched, it was about a surfer from Hawaii whose family ended up moving to the mountains where he picked up snowboarding. He had a grandpa that called him Lil’ Pono.

While in college, I picked up surfing and got my sister and cousin into it at the same time. We would go out in the mornings to attempt to surf on a pretty consistent basis. We ended up jokingly calling ourselves the “Pono Triangle” during this phase.

Flash foward a few years to 2017, and my wife and I found this adorable dog by itself abandoned in the park. We were walking my sister’s dog at the time, but we asked around and no one in the area was claiming her. We went home, but I decided to go back and she was still sitting at that spot in the park. She had no chip, and after a few weeks of posts on the internet, posters in the neighborhood, park, and pound, no one claimed her so we decide to keep her!

Talking to my sister on the phone, I was debating names back and forth and then all of the sudden it clicked to call her Pono, and then the rest is history. Now, we try to take her on as many adventures as possible, which leads to the name Pono Adventures.
